How to weave a rectangle?

Weaving Shapes on the Loom Guide

Introduction

In this Guide you will learn how to weave rectangles. For a full list of shapes included, you can check out this post Weaving Shapes on the Loom Guide

Now, let’s add some shapes to your weaving!

Rectangle Weaving Tutorial

Step 1: Decide the dimensions and direction of the rectangle.

In this example, the length of this rectangle is 18 warp yarns long and 14 rows of weft yarns high. Here I have marked off the warp yarns that I will not use with the orange yarn as a guide.

Step 2: Weave a few rows of plain weave for the base of the rectangle.

Step3: As if you were continuing another row of plain weave in a row, begin a new row.

Be sure to catch the final warp yarn and move the yarn to your desired length.

Step 4: Secure the weft yarn in place with a loom comb or fork.

Step 5: Continue building the shape by repeating steps 3 and 4.

Vertical Rectangle

The same method can be applied with weaving  a rectangle in another direction.

Outer Rectangle

If you want to build a larger rectangle around a smaller one, the most important thing to keep in mind is to make sure the left and right side of the outer rectangle are of equal height.

Step 1: Decide the dimensions and direction of the outer rectangle.

Step 2: Weave a few rows of plain weave for the base of the rectangle.

Step 3: On the left side, build up the weft a few rows until the desired height.

Step 4: On the right side, build up the weft a few rows until the desired height. The right side and the left should match up to the same height.

Step 5: Weave a few rows of plain weave over the two sides and the opening.

Step 6: Once you have reached the desired height, tuck away the yarn tail under the previous weft row.

Conclusion

Adding geometric shapes to weaving add color and pattern. I encourage you to practice with size and color to explore the possibilities.
