Repurposing old clothes is a great way to create more materials for weaving and spark creativity, but also reduce waste. Cutting old jeans is a fast way to make denim yarn for your next project.

What I love about jeans are the two tones found on each side of the fabric. This can create interesting designs and color contrast which can develop visual interests in your projects.

Creating Yarn with Jeans Tutorial

Step 1: Cut a piece of the jean pants into a manage section.

Step 2: Make a short cut with scissors.

Step 3:Turn the material, so that the edge of the jeans and the scissors are parallel.

Step 4: Cut a long, thin stripe of the jeans as you go around the panel.

Step 5: Once you reach the seams, cut up in a diagonal. Then continue cutting straight and around.

Step 6: Wind up the yarn. Now that the entire panel is cut in a long continuous strand, its time to wind and store the yarn.

How to wind up Jean yarn:

Step 1: Secure a yarn end with your thumb and extend the yarn to your pinky finger.

Step 2: Wrap the yarn between the thumb and pinky.

Step 3: When there is about a half a foot to a foot of yarn remaining, wrap the extra yarn around the entire bundle. The yarn should go around the bundle at least once.

Step 4: Tuck in the remaining yarn end and store the yarn.
