Rya Knots Fringe Weave : Basic Weaving Pattern for Beginners
Posted on: 23 Nov, 2019

Introduction

Rya knots create a fringe. This fringe can be added to the end of the weave, which extend the weave design. Fringe can also be added within the body of the weave. This adds volume and texture to the weave.

Rya Knot Tutorial

1. Cut a piece of yarn to the desired length.

TIP: The length of the yarn can vary the appearance of the ray knot. For example, a shorter yarn will rise up, creating a “pom-pom” affect, while longer yarns will lay flat. Experiment with different yarns to find which creates the best design for your piece.

2.Loop one end of the yarn around one warp yarn. Then, loop the other end of the yarn around the neighboring warp yarn.

3. Pull down the two yarn ends to secure the placement of the rya knot.

Tip: The rya knots are not so secure on their own. They need some structure to adhere to.Between every two rows of rya knots, weave 1-2 rows of plain weave to secure the design.

TIP: Instead of using only one strand of yarn, you could use 3 or 4 strands to give a fuller look. Experiment with strand volume to find which creates the best design for your piece.

Conclusion

Patterns are just one part of weaving a design. You will find that yarn with different textures and plies look different and effect the appearance of a pattern. Weaving opens up a lot of different possibilities for designing fiber art in various ways. In later blog posts, I will be exploring various ways to build images and design on the loom.
